our admissions process

Reaching out is the hardest part. Once you do, you’ll speak directly with a member of our admissions team — Phil, Davis, Sterling, or Jordan. No call centers, no intake coordinators reading from a script. Just people who know this program inside and out and genuinely want to help you figure out if Choice House is the right fit.

That first conversation is about getting to know your loved one and your family. We’ll listen to what’s been happening, explain who we are and how we work, walk you through what makes Choice House different, and answer every question you have — honestly, even if the answer isn’t what you were hoping to hear.

the road to recovery starts with a single step

At Choice House, a dually-licensed treatment center for substance use and mental health disorders, we provide a nurturing and supportive community that’s designed to help our men find not only a reprieve from addiction and mental health struggles, but also provide a fresh start at a new life filled with purpose, connection and genuine recovery. We recognize that each client plays an important role in maintaining the milieu we’ve cultivated, which is why we strive to ensure that a potential client joining our program understands transparently what they will be stepping into and participating in. We carefully consider each client prior to admission to make sure they will benefit wholeheartedly from our programming and fit in well with our community. The process itself is relatively simple, however, there is a lot of intention and careful consideration behind each admission.

the steps of admission

The admissions process is designed to be simple. All Choice candidates participate in an intake and interview process. Admissions and clinical staff then assess and discuss each candidate on a case-by-case basis, ultimately leading to the decision to admit or refer to another reputable and trusted program.

Choice House Phil 1

Phil Nutt

Director of Admissions and Marketing
Choice House Phil 1
Phil Nutt
Phil was born and raised in Mississippi, and will greet you with a “sir” or “ma’am” on your first call with him. Seeking recovery and a new life with the help of his family at 19, Phil moved to Colorado after one year at a music school in Nashville. He fell in love with the mountains and the friends he made, and together they found purpose.

After moving to Boulder in 2015, Phil graduated from Leeds School of Business with a finance degree, repaired his relationships damaged by addiction, and became a man in recovery who endeavors to help other men find what he has. When Phil isn’t at Choice House leading our men by example and walking with our families through difficult decisions, you can find him running marathons, playing bogey golf, and FaceTiming with his two sisters.

Davis Funk
Originally from Illinois, Davis came to Colorado to begin his own recovery journey, entering Choice House in 2020. Inspired by his experience, he began working in the behavioral health field in 2021 and quickly developed a deep passion for the work. Today, Davis takes pride in serving as a trusted guide for men and families navigating substance use disorder. Through his work in multiple roles at Choice House, he has developed a comprehensive understanding of the program and its impact. Davis brings a unique ability to blend the perspective of a young man in recovery and Choice House alumnus with professional mastery in guiding our families’ journeys both before and after admission.

Sterling Thompson

Admissions Coordinator
the sterl
Sterling Thompson
Sterling grew up in southwest Missouri and began his recovery journey at the age of 19. Like many people struggling with addiction, his path was not linear. He cycled through periods of relapse for several years before landing at Choice House in his late 20s. Sterling’s experience didn’t just help him get sober; it helped him develop the tools and skills needed to live life as the man he always wanted to be. Drawing from his own recovery, Sterling learned the case management role from the inside out, using lived experience to better understand clients’ needs and support them through complex systems of care. That foundation now guides his work in admissions, where he helps individuals and families navigate the early and often overwhelming stages of seeking treatment. When Sterling isn’t working, you can usually find him spending time with his dog, Waylon, watching his Kansas City Chiefs play on Sundays, or spending time with friends and family.
