What is Residential Treatment?

Residential treatment, also known as inpatient addiction treatment, is a form of intensive therapeutic care where individuals reside at a treatment facility throughout their recovery journey, typically ranging from a few weeks to several months. This setting is ideal for individuals grappling with prolonged substance abuse, alcohol use disorder (AUD), or co-occurring mental health issues, offering a sanctuary from daily stressors and triggers.

In residential treatment, clients receive 24/7 support and supervision from medical professionals and therapists. The program typically includes a structured schedule of therapies, which may involve individual counseling, group therapy, family therapy sessions, and possibly other holistic or alternative treatments such as art therapy, meditation, or exercise.

The primary goal of residential treatment is to provide a safe and supportive environment where individuals can address the underlying issues contributing to their addiction or mental health condition, develop coping strategies, and establish a foundation for long-term recovery. It is particularly beneficial for those with severe conditions or those who have not had success with outpatient treatments.

The Lookout - Residential Treatment Center

Residential treatment offers several significant benefits, especially for men seeking recovery from addiction or mental health issues. Here are three key benefits:

  • 1. Structured and Supportive Environment

Residential treatment provides a highly structured environment, which is particularly beneficial for individuals in the early stages of recovery. This structure includes scheduled therapies, meals, and activities, reducing the stress of daily decision-making and allowing men to focus solely on their recovery. The controlled environment minimizes exposure to triggers and temptations that could lead to relapse, providing a safe space that supports the healing process.

  • 2. Comprehensive and Integrated Care

Men in residential treatment benefit from comprehensive care that addresses not only their substance abuse but also any co-occurring mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD, which are common among men but often go untreated. This integrated approach ensures that all underlying issues are treated simultaneously, which is crucial for effective recovery and reducing the risk of relapse. Care is typically provided by a multidisciplinary team, including psychiatrists, psychologists, medical doctors, and specialized therapists, who work together to tailor treatments to individual needs.

  • 3. Community and Peer Support

Living in a community with others facing similar challenges and working toward recovery can be incredibly powerful. Residential treatment fosters a brotherhood of men who support and encourage each other, share experiences and build lasting bonds. This peer support is a cornerstone of residential treatment, offering both accountability and motivation. Men can learn from each other’s experiences, share coping strategies, and strengthen their social skills in a supportive, non-judgmental environment; vital for personal growth and long-term sobriety.

These benefits make residential treatment a valuable option for men looking to overcome addiction and improve their overall mental health and well-being.

"I want to thank you and the rest of the Choice team for taking such good care of our son over the last 90 days. I think Choice House was just what he needed: a safe place to continue his recovery surrounded by a highly professional and caring staff. That starts with you and works its way down. I think you made more progress with him in 90 days than others have done in years. I just want to thank you again and express to your team the heartfelt appreciation of Anne and me."

"I was so fortunate to find Choice House to continue my recovery. It was the perfect place to transition back into society, which includes all of the step work and therapy that was provided. The people I met there were great and they definitely played a major role in my recovery... At Choice House, I was able to be a full-time student at CU-Boulder. All the other sober houses I looked at would not allow me to take all of my classes. I am grateful to have found Choice House because without it, I would probably be somewhere getting high. The house is so nice and clean, which is pleasantly different than what I was used to when I was getting high all the time. It helped me retrain myself to be a contributing member of society and live a clean and healthy life."

FAQs

How do residential and outpatient rehab programs compare?

Residential rehab programs require individuals to live at the treatment facility, offering intensive care, 24/7 medical supervision, and a structured environment, ideal for those with severe addiction or who need a stable, supportive setting away from daily triggers. Outpatient rehab allows individuals to live at home and maintain their daily responsibilities while attending scheduled treatment sessions, which can range from a few hours a week to several hours a day, making it suitable for those with mild to moderate addiction levels or as a continuation of care after residential treatment. The choice between the two depends on the individual's specific needs, severity of addiction, and personal circumstances.

Can my residential treatment be covered by insurance?

Residential treatment is often covered by insurance, but the extent of coverage can vary significantly depending on the insurance provider and specific policy details.
